Mike Carnell replied to the topic How to Optimize Lean Six Sigma Mentoring Programs in the forum Become a Mentor or Request a Mentor 6 years, 3 months ago
I have no idea how anyone could possible know their mentoring was optimized. To determine that you would have to understand what every other mentoring option would have accomplished and what you did was best.
You want big ROI get good at financial modeling so you understand what a project is worth. ROI is a function of how much opportunity was…[Read more]

Mike Carnell replied to the topic What does an employer look for in hiring a Certified Black Belt? in the forum Black Belts 6 years, 3 months ago
I prefer to start with a tool called Predictive Index (PI). We have, over the years collected data on the PI profile that works. There is no single profile that works but there is a profile which gives you a very high probability of success.
High A – Confidence is generated from within. They know they will be successful because they are doing…[Read more]

Mike Carnell replied to the topic Should a Black Belt be a full time role in an organization? in the forum Black Belts 6 years, 3 months ago
Yes. You put you best trained problem solver on your worst problems. Part time only makes sense if you don’t have your worst problems or your best people. The other option of course if that maybe you don’t care if something gets fixed.

Mike Carnell replied to the topic How can HR apply Six Sigma to optimize HR Data Management? in the forum Ask an Expert 6 years, 3 months ago
These questions always amaze me. Why would data from people be any different than anything else. There is no special formula for averages for people generated data or standard deviation for people data. They are numbers and the tools don’t care where the numbers came from.
Just my opinion.

Mike Carnell replied to the topic What are the characteristics of a "Just do it" project? in the forum Ask an Expert 6 years, 3 months ago
I want to be very clear about what I consider a JDI. Even though a project is a JDI it needs to go through a process of Define, Measure, Improve and Control. When I say that I am speaking of a thought process not some inane tool checklist that some MBB sat in a corner and noodled because they it was all a good idea.
Even in a JDI it needs…[Read more]

Mike Carnell replied to the topic Is there a "best" Six Sigma tool? in the forum Six Sigma Tools 6 years, 3 months ago
I agree with Joel the idea of a “best tool” really doesn’t even make any sense. A hammer is great for driving nails. You can use it with screws too but it is the wrong tool.
As much as I hate to disagree with Joel If I had one tool it would be MSA which is actually a few different tools. I really have no idea what my dat is telling me until I…[Read more]
